If you ever wonder what's going on me right now, here's the update;

It's been awhile since my last post. I've been busy working on my new demoreel. I really hope I could get a good job over here, it's tough, & I know I need to be patient and calm when there're no responses from the recruiters or whenever I got a rejection email. I need to rely on God.

My short film is wrapping out the final stage, music and sound are pretty much done too. I'm sorry for not updating my other blog: thewannabeproject.blogspot.com that I don't have time for it right now.

Anyway, I really like those test that I'm animating right now. Can't wait to finish it and share with you guys. Behold. =)

A short film that I recently just completed.

The final version is not ready to show yet because the final music and sound effects are still in progress. I'm also still wrapping up some details and render mistakes.

For the purpose of job hunting, I edited a story reel that I put the 2d animatic, 3d layout and final rendering as to compare and show the breakdown of the shots, as well as to show how my storyboard transit into 3d workflow.

Eventually, this musical brought back my childhood memories & dreams.

I remember every movies that I had watched with my parents, & this is one of it.
I used to sketch out the beast on the paper but it failed until the day I found the coloring book... XD

I can't remember how many times I've played the VHS I have.

Every animator & artist has the first thing that enlighten them when they're kids, & Beauty & the Beast is mine.

Listen to the scores & songs playing live is more stunning than I expected. =)

I found this in youtube, it played in KL, Malaysia~ though the sets, lighting & costume design was a little different. ^^

Lotz of lotz of things happening but Im glad I still be able to get my work/ demoreel down by the end of this semester. =)

For this piece, I only have 3 weeks to work on it, as you can see how blocky it is.. sorry for the line quality too~

I think.. I would like to keep how it looks like right now.. if only I have extra time or a huge encouragement from you guys to push me to finish it. XP

How to Train Your 'Acting Choice'

Week 03: You Know What Some of the Kids Said? More about Layout

Before we get into Animation, I would like to expand a little about LAYOUT from Week 02. =)

It all start with the 12 Principles of Animation: Staging

We don't simply layout-ing, putting camera around if we know how important staging is.
If we study animation featured, we noticed how every single shots has been designed, layout nicely.

& how's my friend, Jin Liang think about layout design, do check out one of his post: Lady & The Tramp & I'm totally agree with him.

The Basic idea of Staging

We can see how everything should be organized nicely because everything appear within the frame tells the story. Good staging lead audience into the right mood of your story, it make your audience focus on your story. & Yea, it's all about story.

What we can expand from Staging is Composition,

& what we can learn from Composition is the Rule of Thirds.

This is how's the great master piece painted during Renaissance, good photography nowadays, they all followed the Rule of Thirds.

Let's take my shots for an example..

& now you can really see how I can improve my composition.

The third thing you may need to consider is Leading the Audience's Eye.

Spungella on July 2009 has great post of this topic.

The basic idea is to create an area of focus from shots to shots.
The focus area could be the position of your character, the direction of your character looking, the props that pointing to specific direction & etc.

For my shots,

shot 1 & the direction of little girl looking.

when we put shot 1 & 2 together, we can see the direction of 2 characters looking.

shot 2 & the direction of batman looking.

when we put shot 2 & 3 together, we can see the direction of 2 characters looking.

shot 3 & the direction of both of them looking.

By applying this, it would spice up your shots, & this is how you differentiate a good or bad shots.

& So here's my improved layout,

Week 02: You Know What Some of the Kids Said

Yeah yeah, after ideas brainstorming from Week 01, I finally decided what I'm going to do!

I'm going to create a scene with a little girl was about to sleep, sitting on her bed & telling her dad about her worries, what she heard from the other kids said in school.

I want to make it a cute, sweet, adorable character animation..

Cast: Little Girl, Dad
Set: Room

After I got my ideas all set, I quickly go into Maya to create the layout with my characters (from modified norman).
I did sketch out my ideas, but too bad I left my sketches in school lab computer..

Anyway, here's my layout.

Haha, surprise~!! Batman?! Yeah, I changed it to Batman instead of 'Dad' because of 2 reasons:

1st, I want to make it looks like a scene from the Batman movies.
2nd, I don't have time to modify a 'Dad' norman..

Something about layout,
I try to make it more 'movie' approach instead of just one camera. It's good to make your piece that looks like it's a scene from movies.

At least I believe it make your work stand out among the dialogue animation, especially student's demoreel. Of course, animation quality is still the king.

Alright, this is actually the 1st layout I created, as you noticed the switch between First & Third camera is the only different.

It's actually not that bad because the 1st shot established everything clearly.. but it turned out too clear for me..

I prefer the top one because it doesn't show Batman at the 1st camera, when it cut to Second shot only people realize... it's Batman!
& they'll scream 'what the hell'.. & this is the respond I want!

Do you like the layout? heeh

So once the layout, cameras are all set, you're ready to animate it!!
But not so fast, before you really begin your animation, some brainstorm & planning should have done as well~

& I'll talk about this in my next post.

Week 01: You Know What Some of the Kids Said?

Yeah yeah, finally I got something to post here~

I'm working on a new clip now which I think it's a pretty good idea if I can share my progress here. =)

I'm taking JD's workshop now, & I'm doing a dialogue piece..

Week 01

In order to do a dialogue animation, you should find yourself a dialogue clip first (of course~).
There are many ways you can get it through internet but it's not easy to get a good one sometime.

Few things to bare in mind:

Look for something contrast in speaking tone, clear accent but not mumbling, less background sound.
Contrast as in emotional changes as well, to show character's thoughts, thinking, emotional gear change.
Avoid too famous actors, movies/ scenes that too recognizable. It's not a good idea if someone recognize where's your dialogue originally from, or who's the original actor who spoke the line, these would cause the audience recall the original scene, & letting your animation down by comparing them.
Not from an animation featured for sure. Just like Michelangelo was not going to re-paint, re-produce Leonardo da Vinci's artworks.
Avoid FXXX or similar words if you're putting it into demoreel. Keep it clean.
If there's more than 1 character conversation, we should look for the 'conflict' between 2 or more characters.
For example, Character A would like to offer something to Character B but B refuse to accept it.
Be able to create the context that show your brilliant, interesting, creative ideas. We don't want to re-create the similar scene from the dialogue you've choosen.

I've several other clips from movies like Memento, Legend of 1900 but I decided to work on this because I would like to do something with a cute little girl scene.

However, it's too long, length of 9-12 seconds is always preferable.

& here's the version I edited.

I take out some of the lines to make the topic even more clear & focus, & tried to reduce the background sound (esp the foot step walking sound at the beginning) as well.

Alright, I'm cool with this & I'm ready to move to the next step --> Brainstorm the ideas, Show your talent~

but remember, try not to involve politics, sexual, racist, toilet/dirty jokes, animal abusing, violence issues in it.. if you're putting it into your demoreel.

That's all for week 01, there are more to come. What I mentioned here is basically the basic rules of it.

A Day in San Francisco Zoo

The first Wednesday of every month is the free day of Zoo, with your California ID you can get it free. Other wise you got to pay $15 for entrance fee.

I didn't take much photos because I did more life sketches this time. Yes, zoo is a good place to do quick life sketches, study animals & stuff..

If only the animals in zoo behave more energetic. Don't sleep all the time, don't hide in the cave.. but they've been caged & taken good care. They're like the Narnian captured by the Tashbaan. What else more I can ask from them? Shame on me.

See, I need more practice on drawing animals, definitely. Thanks for this wonderful zoo trip that provided me to do more drawings, & realizing how much more practice I need?

& it's glad to meet others schoolmates that most of them came to zoo to sketch animals as well~! Cheers

This is a fake commercial that I did for my class project.

Sneakericious = Sneaker + Delicious

Why NIKE Dunk SB? Because it's my favorite sneaker of all type.

Why sneaker transform/ evolve into a monster? Because it's my imagination as a sneaker lover, no why.

Why sneaker is delicious? Because I ate it before... (cold~~)

This project took me about 5 months to complete.
Start from scratch, to design, modeling, texturing, rigging, animation, lighting, rendering, & compositing etc.
Of course it's not a perfect piece of work, & it would never be.. (especially the reflection on the floor & the animation)
But this is the best I be able to produce so far, due to the time & skill I have.

Thanks Jason Patnode (class instructor) & all my dear friends who commented on my work! Thanks the panels of Spring Show who made this nominated into screening.

My another assignment from Character Animation class, Get Out from Chair.
Yes, the subject for this assignment is to practice/ learn character weight shifting, from 1 point to another point. The center of gravity, how we move our hips when we lift 1 of our leg up etc.

It's a fun project. Moreover, it's a weird idea.. Tom Bertino asked me where I got this idea from...

well.. I don't know, maybe Wall-E..? I'm not sure.. it just suddenly pop up in my head. I think it would looks very funny in visual... maybe I felt like the character..~

Here's my latest flour sack that I just completed 2 month ago. Yea, another/ new 3d Flour Sack..! which I found myself enjoying animate it..~ with the character rig I got from highend3d.com..

and the one I drew in 2004.. the 2d Flour Sack. This looks really crappy..~ u won't like it! =)

Finally, submission for springshow 2009 is finally finished (deadline due tomorrow..) !! Yataa~!! have been doing & refining my works for this past few weeks... ofcause, this flur sack is one of it..

FYI, this is a very fun book to read at. Mr. Bluth shared his view of his career, not the history nor the drawing skill, but the positive attitude that we need all the time. Mr. Bluth showed his talent; moreover, his passionate in storytelling industry.

Can you believe this?! I created such cliché gag into my storyboard in 21st century.....!!! I'm running out of idea...

My latest assignment for storyboarding class,

Presentation Board for Advertising industry,

is a board that you draw to present to your client, to pitch the job, to convince them, to get the contact.

I learned the different between presentation board & production board, & got to know how ppl in advertising world expect the presentation board is.

I never know whether I will be in advertising field or not. The fact is- CG needed in TV commercial, as well as storyboarding, especially in Malaysia.

Anyway, this is a good practice for me, esp digital painting. Furthermore, this 'presenatation board' thing might meant similar with 'concept art'- convert your idea into visual & present to your director.

We just need to do more practice in drawings. Enjoy~ =D

Yeah, the first best movie I watched in 2009!

I prefer because it's actually a 'documentary' instead of 'love story'..

The documentary of Indian lifestyle, or to be more specific, there are groups of people who live hard & struggling to survive, not only India! It's every corner around the world.. that we rarely aware of.

The film has brought this 'slumdog scenes' up cautiously, with great visual & cinematography impact. Plus the soundtrack is really awesome! that spark out the entire film.

The opening chase scene is one of my favorite!

Well, honestly I like the 1st half more than the 2nd half- I find the part after they grew up & how difficult they got together- the 'love story' part is over 'Hollywood'.. but Definitely exclude the Bollywood group dance at the last scene! Love it~

There are 3 questions from this film.. (what I think)

Many answer are actually hidden in our daily life, but if there's no 'question', something would never be the 'answer'... Most of the time things don't go exactly ABCD 4 choices. Yes, instance culture is.
Is capitalism the savior of slumdog? Who don't want to be millionaire? No, it's not capitalism & it never be. Not communism either.
Eco crisis? Yea, people worry about losing their job, being laid off, house gone etc.. but look at those who stay beside the junk yard.. Yes, we always work hard in order to survive, but stop complaining when you loss something that you thought you're deserved for it.

No idea of what I'm talking about? Go watch it! A film that you must watch this year!

& I don't know why the trailer editted with The Ting Tings, one of the album that I listening lately. It's good as well~

It's always fun to learn philosophy, I love philosophy, never feel bored in learning it. However, it's really tough & not right for me to apply any philosophies into my work, my artwork, as an artist.

I've been struggling to do so..

For the sake of the requirement of my The Art & Ideology of 20th Century class assignment, I did it. & I got grade A for it.

Feel free to read what I wrote, it's FUN!

This project was done few years ago, from modeling to animation, rendering & compositing. The main theme of this project was to animate a character walk up to the staircase & make a turn. Rather than this, we were allowed to add anything with our creativity to make the work more interesting. Based on the things I have added, back now I realized that it can be fit into Foucault’s ideology, “The Death of Man”.

Firstly, my main character was a robot who has the image of Man, yet the behaviors of Man. It walked up to the stair, along the path & make a turn; just like how’s a human walk. As you can see, it actually walk in a odd way, or you might felt it behave so deadly, repeating the same walking distance & poses. All these were to pointed to us, the Man- we walk, we make life everyday but somehow we live deadly as we repeating certain activities’ that we never realize. Furthermore, what we’re doing/have done might look odd to other living things.

How about the world? The world I created is not exactly the real world we live. The stair wasn’t built based on a solid ground. The ‘motorbike looks alike’ vehicle was floating. These is the world that has no gravity apply, everything was floating as in a vacuum space. But how did they move like they have weight, as in under the condition of gravity? It’s technology that make it happened. The robot be able to walk as it’s constrained by the gravity, the vehicle has the ability to control its own gravity, so that it remained at the same position without floating around. They have the power to control the level of gravity. What I tried to imply is, human & his technology has come to the stage that they be able to take over the power of gravity, or in other words, they be able to control over the nature power. Human and his machines are so strong that they can do almost everything.

The enhancement: you might also realized that my robot character walked, turned, stopped, got up to the vehicle & drove away. This continuous actions showed the character seems to has its own thoughts and decision to make, it know to stop before it got up to the vehicle, yet it know how to got up to the vehicle more than just walk and turn. Moreover, it know to control the vehicle and drove it away. All these were tried to enhance what’s the robot character be able to do. The vehicle as well as the ‘gravity control machine’ was fully designed and in charged by the robot- the Man has great ability to control the nature through technology. And why the robot be able to do all these sort of things? It’s because the robot had been pre-programmed to accomplished the entire actions, which this lead us to the next main point I going to tell.

According to Foucault, the Man would be vanished as his definition of Man: the concept & study of Man that built since late 18th century (one of the Anthropology representative, Immanuel Kant), would be disappeared as well as Nietzsche‘s ‘the Dead of God’. The study of Human- Anthropology has been the main stream of learning in late 18th century. The results of studied Human as the center of all subjects has built the foundation of epistemology of that time. However, Foucault thought this main stream of study and concept would be passed and disappeared, which cause the corruption of epistemology that built based on it, his Death of Man.

The pre-programmed of the robot to do the whole actions refer to the main stream: study on Human. The death of Man is just like the pre-programmed, if the formula has removed or the system has crashed, the robot will stop functioning, or even worse, lost control. Secondly, the technology & machines equal to the study, researches that had been done during late 18th century & so on. The development that had been invented to build the foundation, & later it became a main stream, formed the system, utilized the formula/date & designed the program. Remember the enhancement part I mentioned as well, the character got up to the vehicle & drove it away, to emphasize the greatness achievement that had been done so far. Lastly and again, the robot refer to us, the Man, we invented it, we developed it & we just followed it. Robot do what it has been programmed to do; we live based on what we have. If the program removed, we loss what we owned; how is the robot going to move, based on what we continue to live? Of cause Foucault has the answer for this from our class Module 5.

In conclusion, if I’m allowed to, if I’m qualified enough, my work could criticized on Foucault’s Death of Man as well. Personally I would think that Foucault’s idea was based on certain phenomenon & parts of history activities & studies but not exactly from the origin of human being. How I implied this in my animation? Here’s the answer, the robot moved what it had been designed. It learned the code, understood the data, but it never know who invented it. Just like us, we learned great philosophy, the history, the study of Man, but we never understand the origin the Man, as in who created it, who is the creator. We live like the robot, whether there’s dead of God or death of Man.

I don't know why I need to define my work with any philosophies. I'm just an artist. It's really too much for me. But it's good for me to learn this, do something I'm not willing to do! It's so challenging! You should try it next time.

However, it's still good to study philosophy. Why? because it make you realized something, something about the world, what's going behind all the phenomenons? But 1 thing you should keep in mind, philosophy is just a study, from how's Man observed + analyzed + experiments from the nature, the culture, the behavior of Man. It's not the Absolute Truth!

So what is the Absolute Truth? Do you think there's existence of Absolute Truth? if there is, what is it? Do you have the answer? Have you think about the answer ever?

Yes, I do. The God I believe, Christianity is.

AAU x Fall Animation Festival x Eric Goldberg

It was AAU's Fall Animation Festival last Friday, with featured speaker: Eric Goldberg, an experienced (very) 2D Animator & Director.

He came & shared how he get involved in animation industry, his career & some of his work. It's pretty inspiring. Not only his amazing drawing+animation skills, but also his right attitude & big passion to his work, HE LOVE WHAT HE's DOING!

I'm sure you watched this before, part of Fantasia 2000, directed by Eric Goldberg

During the Q&A session, somebody asked him shall a walkcycle divide from the story.. ( I actually not so sure what's his complete question..sorry sorry) Eric Goldberg said, 'There's a different between 2D & 3D animators is that 3D animators tend to do a Familiar(Normal) Walkcycle 1st, and another walkcycle with personality later. (This is what 3D animators' tasks is given usually..)
However, 2D animators never think there is any walkcycle which is Familiar/Normal. Every single walkcycle come with a personality, even a very subtle one.. I strongly agree with this, if you check my older post, I realized this when I'm doing my walkcycle, when I tried to observe how's other ppl walk, & you'll realize every normal human walk with certain personality/emotion, some of them are rushing, or relaxing, or they looks happy, or at least you can see they're actually thinking something.

A normal/familiar walkcycle is not a robotic walk. Again, normal people doesn't act normal, because they're (already) normal. Perhaps only abnormal ppl tend to be as normal as they can be..

But how abt animation? How are we going to do a good walkcycle? Of couse we need to study the every movement of human walk, from the realistic world.. but don't forget that animation is abt exaggeration too, even a lil of exaggerate on your character's walk would spark up your entire animation~! Cheers ^^ (this is what I said, not Eric Goldberg..HAHA)

07 Reel: Walkcycle Part 01 [Normal...?]

Walkcycle is 1 of the difficult thing to make it good, especially a 'normal' walkcycle. This is what I did during my term break: 'Normal' walkcycle.

What is 'normal'? Does a character act nothing at all is called 'normal'? without any expression/emotion called 'normal'? Or without any exaggeration on the animation/movement is called 'normal'? It's not easy to give a clear definition. Somehow I always feel a character who act nothing at all, no expression/emotion is kind of fake, as he pretend to be 'normal' but he's actually not. A normal character doesn't act 'normal'.

This is how I did, I try to reduce the exaggeration to the max; I just don like to animate a character without any exaggeration, it's not an animation to me.

And try to add an emotion to this character, with a subtle facial expression and body gesture. Just imagine when a person walking on the street, he must have some kind of emotion with him: He is happy today, or sad, mad, or bored...

Of cause, some study and analyze on how to do a walkcycle have been done as well. Like few good reading, look at how's human walk...~

Btw, this is a Norman character, which provided by my character animation class instructor.
I actually still working on these, not the final aniamtion yet. Perhaps I can reduce the followthrough that I did for its hands and foot. Comments and critiques is welcome~!! =D

06 Reel: Raty Live

Another project that I involved in Passion Republic, the 2nd Raty project. We tried to do some animation test for our Raty character for the purpose of this project. I remember Simon is the one who propose the idea: we comp our cg character with real live footage. And this is how it began...~

I'm the one who had been assigned to handle this project. I tried to brainstorm of few different simple story at first..& I've been through some discussion with Boss, Asn, how we design the story, the action/ acting of our character Raty. Also, the schedule/timeline for this project...

I shoot the background photo, capture some good angle, and figure out how's the camera work.. Continue work on the storyboard, animatic, and of cause, we act it out~

I animate most of the shots, shot 01 was animated by me and Asn did some modification on it later on, & shot 04 was animated by Asn.

The rest was done by me, from animation, to lighting & rendering (Final Gather), compositing, editing etc.

Like their website said, this is FOR FUN PURPOSE ONLY! Yea, I really enjoy doing this so much, because it's FUN~! especially when I'm 'interacting' with Raty...phew~

First day of class..

Today is my first day of class!! Yea, Character Animation 2, my instructor name is Mohhamed Allababidi. 1 of the 1st few things he mentioned is,

"Keep the Passion.. You've to love what you're doing!"

Hahah ya he's right, this is the real main spirit to become a good animator! It's actually apply to everything that we're doing! Every position every job.. no matter what you do. Somehow the fact is we're always struggeling for the sake of money.. it's sad, but nothing stop us!

It always remind me those days in TOA, yes miss those days~ I'm glad that I always get the chance to meet nice & great people everywhere. Thanks God~!!

Hahaha Today I have dinner in Malaysian Restaurant.. Yeah Malaysia food~~ finally.. we happened to go there just coincidentally, the restaurant appeared in front of us suddenly..
We have 2 Malaysian, 1 American, and 1China Chinese. Neither of them tried any Malaysian food before..

We decided to order Satay, Nasi Lemak, Fried Ikan Sambal, Japanese Roasted Chicken, Cendol and Bobo Chacha for desserts.

Satay: NOT nice at all, some how it tasted weird, doesn't taste like how's satay should taste like, a little bit sour...

Nasi Lemak: the rice taste really not bad, but the sambal.. err.. haihz, I miss the original Sambal so much..

Fried Ikan Sambal: it looks how it suppose to look like, taste ok, just not spicy enough, not tasty enough, that's all..

Japanaes Fried Chicken: haha yeah, it's from the menu, why we didn't order curry chicken? because our friend from China want to order this rather than curry chicken, we saw this dish from the other table first, and it looks nice, yeah, and it does taste good too.. chicken skin was so crispy (like roasted chicken in chicken rice)~~ Just wonder why this dish appear in the menu? as long as it taste good lar!

Cendol: this is really nice, original taste from Malaysia! not sure abt Bobo Cha Cha.. my friend said it doesn't that nice~

Too much critiquesize for the dinner tonight, hahah.. mm.. Overall: okok~, 2nd time? Yea, for the sake of the cendol~ but for sure wont visit there again so soon!
Anyway, it's worth to try it, you'll never know how is malaysia food taste like in foreign country, nothing just come eventually..

Figure Studio: My Life Drawing Class Part 02

The 1st class assignment, that required us to choose and copy 1 of the Great painters' painting during 15th-18th century, & this is what I've chosen, The Raising of the Cross, by a Baroque painter in 17th century, Peter Paul Rubens.

My drawing, which actually I just need to focus on only 1 figure- Jesus Christ rather than drawing all of the other characters.. phew~ or else I'm gonna to be crazy..

Anyway, the body of Jesus Christ was painted clean & fine in the painting, which actually not according to the fact that the body of Jesus Christ was bleed, full of scars and injured seriously, as you can see from the movie The Passion of Christ.

The 2nd assignment, copy and draw from a photograph of portrait. I found this reference from library, a photography book which full of celebrities' portraits. Luke Perry, an American actor.

The Final Drawing

The 3rd, also the last assignment of Figure Studio Class, required us to copy n draw the drawings of Pierre Paul Prud'hon, a French Romantic painter with his great figure drawings. References was provided by our instructor, Zack.

Drawings from my first class, Figure Studio, which basically teach how to draw human, from proportion, structure, form of muscles, light and shadow (shading) of human. Beijing Olympic 2008

The last scene of Beijing Olympic 2008 Opening Ceremony (Li-Ning ran towards to the final Olympic torch in the mid of the air) was so impressive. The visual was so strong impact and touched, which also made me so excited and tears in my eye.. heeh can't believe huh.. A live performance that made people remember yet not anyone can create something like this, an idea which works perfectly. Respect to the director of this opening ceremony~!

I drew this in year 2004, few years ago.. just want to show here again because it's OLYMPIC right now! Hahah All the best, Malaysian athletes!

Summer semester is end~ It's a short semester, only 7.5 weeks and I earned 6 credits, but don't know abt my grade yet... Anyway, I'm going post some of my works that I did this semester, after I come back from LA.. hahah Yeah~ I going to LA this Sunday, attending Siggraph conference!

I bought a new Dslr.. Canon EOS 400D~ (at 1st thought of buying 450D) just got it few hours ago.. So I'll post some photograph soon here as well, I want to record down whatever things and people I find nice here.. with a better camera, better quality, tend to be more professional..
I have abt 1 month break now but I can't wait for the next semester.. because I want to meet more people! got really little friends here..

planning to do walkcycle animation during this break, as to keep myself practicing and learning.. hopefully can work out something really good to show people! haah (I'll be working on my dad's church website as well!)

Just finished this today, quite happy with the result. White background version is the 1st I created, something I wanted to create at 1st; but after a few different tried out, the black bg attract me the most. & I created 2 monotone versions, gray & purple color scale, just for fun! =D
